soggy cardboard goes to landfill
With more rain on its way, here's a reminder about recycling cardboard...
The Materials Recycling Facility cannot use wet cardboard and they test each load for moisture content before accepting materials. If the test fails, the whole lorry load is rejected and this means the waste is sent to landfill instead – a huge waste of resources and everyone’s efforts to recycle.
What’s the problem?
As wet cardboard dries out, the fibres weaken and crumble, making it harder to recycle and potentially becoming completely unusable.
What can you do?
The best thing to do is to flatten, fold or break up your cardboard so it fits in your recycling sacks to keep it dry. If the box is too big to fit, please try to find somewhere dry to store it until your next collection.
